Snow Crossed

leave a comment »

It appears that winter has decided to bless northern Utah with it’s presence.  Temperatures in the 20’s and a gray sky greeted racers for the final points race of the 2009 UTCX Series.  While many in the state struggled to simply drive their cars, these brave souls ventured forth in to the elements in search of double points and the chance to say, “Yes I race Cross, in all conditions.”  No fair weather racing here, no sir.  Ogden’s Fort Buenaventura Historic Park provided the venue. Ma Nature, the weather.  Participants, their own embrocation.

As the day progressed, the course became more and more trecherous, leading to many instances of this…..

In the end, The Church Of The Big Ring took home bragging rights as the top team for the 2009 season.  Bart Gillespie (MonaVie/Cannondale) holds on to his title as Cross King by a narrow 20 point margin over Ali Goulet (CotBR).  On the ladies side Erika Powers (Revolution Cycles/Peak Fasteners) carries off the honors of top female crosser.  Top honors go to the Utah Valley University Grill for their Double Cheese Burger.

Just for fun a short trip down by the river.

November Cross Round-Up (The Men’s Side)

So here it is the end of November. The UTCX Series is winding up and winter may be arriving shortly. November brought us the Boulder Cup, Cutthroat Cross, and the Utah State Championship Races. The Boulder Cup introduced us to the joys of sand. Deep clinging sand.

Mike Kracht (Church Of The Big Ring) Mired In The Sands Of Boulder

During November we were shown that indeed bikes were in fact, made to be air-bourne.

Adam Snyder (Team Jamis) at The Boulder Cup

Bart Gilespie (MonaVie/Cannondale) at Wheeler Farm

In November we were introduced to a dominant force

November also showed us some close fought titles….

Barriers

leave a comment »

In  a previous episode of the Marx, we discussed barriers.  The proper technique was shown and we moved on to other subjects.  After the pilgrimage to The Peoples Republic of Boulder, we have decided to revisit this topic.  It’s  short and sweet.  I believe 4 or 5 pictures will convey our thoughts…….

Kelli Emmett (Giant) Boulder Cup

Tim Johnson (Cannondale/CXWorld) Boulder Cup

These should be sufficient to demonstrate a pattern…….  Simple you say.  What’s the point.  It’s really a beautiful thing to see.  Then along comes a maverick. His name? Adam Snyder and he rides for Jamis. He’s got another idea, he has a better approach……

Yes he landed it… The second time around he cleared both barriers much to the enjoyment of the large crowd.

More pictures of the Boulder Cup are at Pbase.

Mud…..

with one comment

This past weekend, we at Fred Marx, undertook to make the perilous journey to the Peoples Republic Of Boulder.  The reason for the trek, in the days that followed a record October storm on the Front Range you ask?  Two days of UCI cross action.  Saturday saw the running of the Blue Sky Velo Cup in soupy conditons at Longmont.

Bo Pitkin (Church Of The Big Ring)

The winter storm left the roads to Colorado layered with snow and ice.  The Utah contingent was stopped in various parts of Wyoming.  Two members of the new Utah congregation The Church Of The Big Ring, made the perilous journey.  Bo Pitkin and Mike Kracht took the start in cat 3.  Bo finished the Saturday slop fest while Mike suffered a mechanical.  The days Elite cat spoils went to Katie Compton (Planet Bike) and Tim Johnson (Cannondale/CXWorld). Both motored to decisive, nay dominant victories.

Katie Compton (Planet Bike)
Tim Johnson (Cannondale/CXWorld)

The real heros were in the pit.  A good change meant a clean bike and a brief respite from the drag of clogging mud.

Meredith Miller (Cal Giant Berries) executes a smooth change
The Problem

The Solution......

More Dirty Pictures…..

At Fred Marx, we determined on day one, that mud is a very entertaining way to create havoc with a bike race.  On Day two we learned about sand.  More words are needed to further detail the trials of the 801 mission to Colorado.  These words will follow in due time.

Utah ‘cross day 4

Finally a change.  No, a new strong woman did not arrive to knock Kathy Sherwin out of the top seed, No Bart Gillespie didn’t DNF.  The weather finally gave us here at the Marx something new.  It rained.  You all know what that means right?  Wet crossers.  Mud splattered visages were seen around the Andy Ballard Equestrian Center in Draper Utah today as The Utah Cyclocross Series entered it’s fourth day.

Dave Wood (Church Of The Big Ring) in early Masters 35+ action.

The women’s race went out under overcast skies as did men’s B.  The real fun began just in time for the start of men’s A.  Thunderstorms rolled across the valley, and we had ourselves some cyclocross weather.  Only one entrant was heard to request that his entry fee be used for next weeks race.  Claiming to be a fair weather racer, concerned about the lightning he was.  “This is cross..” he was reminded.  HTFU! race cross.  Yes, someone has already printed the t-shirt.

Bart Gillespie (MonaVie/Cannondale) had little trouble taking the men's A's

Ali Goulet was conspicuously absent from the field as he was off in Louisville Ky winning the Masters 35+ at the USGP event held there today.  Without further adieu, here are the pictures.  A full gallery is posted at Pbase

Once again a beautiful clear day at the Weber County Fairgrounds, as The Utah Cyclocross Series entered its second weekend.  The course ran similar to week one, only in reverse direction.   Kathy Sherwin (Velo Bella/Ellsworth) dominated the women’s field.

The juniors turned out in force once again and brought their A game faces.

Game face....

Game face....

In men’s A flight, a fierce battle between Ali Goulet (Church Of The Big Ring) and Bart Gillespie (Cannondale-Mona Vie) raged for the entire 50 minutes.  Goulet prevailed in the end.  Goulet verses Gillespie appears to be a great match up to watch this season

Week three will bring the show to the Fairgrounds in Heber City.  Full race results and information are at the Utah Cyclocross website.  A more complete look at the day can be found at Pbase
